Sulfated Castor Oil no. 1

 

 

 

Fatty oils can be esterified with sulphuric acid if the starting oil has unsaturated fatty acids or hydroxyl groups available. In doing so SO3H-groups are only attached to double bonds or hydroxyl groups but not to the terminal carboxyl group.  Are OH-groups available on the starting product, as they are e.g. on ricinoleic acid, ricinoleic-acid-sulphuric ester in pure form can be obtained under appropriate conditions:
